2016 – A Look Back

Wow – what a year 2016 was! I was lucky enough to be part of 84 weddings with couples from all over the world who chose to marry in this beautiful area I call home. The Isle of Skye has become one of the most popular wedding destinations in the world and I feel priviliged to have met such a diverse range of people who chose it as the location for their wedding.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all the couples who have asked me to be part of their day over the last decade. March is my tenth anniversary of becoming a wedding photographer and I look forward to another ten years! And of course, I’m really looking forward to meeting all of this year’s fantastic couples.

It’s always hard pulling together a review of the year because there are so many fantastic shots to choose from. I recently put together a slideshow which contained over 200 images and you can watch that here – if you have ten minutes to spare grab a coffee or a drink and enjoy https://vimeo.com/197549866

This post contains a slightly condensed selection so that you don’t get bored scrolling!

The enchanting Fairy Glen

For Rachel and Dinesh from Rhode Island, USA, a Fairy Glen elopement on the Isle of Skye was the perfect choice for their wedding. The couple met online dating and after 18 months together, romantic Dinesh arranged a holiday to Mexico to coincide with their 29th birthdays, which happen to be two days apart. Rachel had no idea where they were going until they got to the airport and was totally surprised when her boyfriend got down on one knee on a romantic beach to ask her to marry him. They wanted to have their wedding somewhere neither of them had been before and as they both love whisky, the Isle of Skye seemed the perfect place! Beautiful scenery and fine malts!

As locations go, the Fairy Glen is one of the best – ethereal, spiritual, beautiful – and although there are often tourists around, there are a few little private pockets to be found to hold an intimate ceremony.
Rachel and Dinesh chose to say their vows close to a little waterfall, near the top of the glen, on a chilly March morning. The weather was mixed – a little sun but mostly cloudy with the threat of rain.

The couple were piped down their outdoor aisle by local piper Lea MacLeod and the music echoing around the glen was hauntingly beautiful. The whole ceremony was emotional; I love the shot of Dinesh wiping away Rachel’s tears.

After they read their vows to one another, Dinesh presented Rachel with a gorgeous necklace. Such a thoughtful thing to do and it was a lovely surprise for her. The necklace was a perfect accessory to Rachel’s glamorous wedding look.
Rachel’s beautiful stole, which kept her warm in the chilly March weather, is around 60 years old and was orignally sold in the 1950s at Gimbel’s Department Store. Thanks to Verbena Vintage Etsy Store it made it’s way to Rachel.

As part of their ceremony, Rachel and Dinesh wanted to incorporate some traditional Celtic marriage rituals.
They had a handfasting and they also drank from the Quaich – the cup of friendship.

After we finished our photography session, which also included some time around the Quiraing area, Rachel and Dinesh went for dinner at The Old Inn at Carbost. The owners and customers gave them a fantastic welcome – cheering them when they walked in – and their wedding meal was haggis and fish and chips. Sounds delicious!

Rachel and Dinesh’s wedding was recently featured on the fabulous wedding blog We Fell In Love so check it out! Meanwhile, if you are planning an elopement or a wedding on Skye please get in touch here.

A stunning setting for a romantic Skye wedding

Sometimes you just know when something is right and that’s how it was when Sara and Michael decided to elope to the Isle of Skye, with just a few weeks to plan their day. When Michael first contacted me he was in Europe on a trip he’d been planning for some time, visiting the birthplaces of his varied ancestry which included Irish, Scottish and Polish. Before he left for his trip, he and his beautiful girlfriend decided to make the trip extra special – they would elope and have a romantic Skye wedding, somewhere vast and beautiful.

My services were booked just a couple of weeks in advance of the big day and when I met Michael and Sara the day before, I was just struck by how laid back and calm they were about everything and how crazy they were about each other.

The next day I met with them at Duisdale Hotel where they were staying and witnessed them getting ready together – the tender moment when Michael helped Sara get her headpiece “just right”, and when she returned the favour, securing his button hole (boutonniere). Sara also chose to wear a beautiful silver otter necklace from local jewellery company Love From Skye.

After arriving at the ceremony location where we met the ever lovely Sonja Eckl, independent celebrant, Sara and Michael chose the spot they wanted to say their vows, and then Sara went atop the hill to ready herself to walk towards her future and with her dress billowing in the breeze and her hand securing her beautiful headpiece, she made her way towards an emotional Michael.

The whole ceremony was personal, intimate and beautiful with the most beautiful personal vows to each other.  There is nothing better than seeing two people, completely in love, making this committment to each other.

Here are some images from their beautiful wedding.

Stella and Ben arrived on the Isle of Skye in May, fresh from their official wedding in Oxford which was a more traditional affair, attended by family and friends. The couple had originally really wanted to have an intimate wedding somewhere on Skye but because some family were not able to make it to the island, they decided to come themselves and arranged a beautiful, intimate Loch Coruisk wedding, conducted by my lovely celebrant friend, Sonja Eckl. The only other person present was musician Lea MacLeod who played his pipes beautifully for the entrance of the bride and groom. A little later, during the ceremony, Lea played a tune on his whistle – I watched Stella and Ben, totally wrapped up in each other, and looked around…..there was not a soul to be seen. It was as if we four were the only people in the vast, beautiful landscape and the music was hauntingly beautiful. It was a really special moment.

After the ceremony I spent the day with Stella and Ben travelling around Skye, making lovely portraits of them in some of the gorgeous locations on the island. It was a pleasure to spend time with this lovely, young couple. I truly do have the best job ever. Here are a few of my favourite images from Stella and Ben’s day.

The weather in the Scottish Highlands this year has been bizarre – usually it rains a lot but most of the weddings I’ve photographed so far this year have been in rather better weather. And so it was for Kate and Ian from London who had planned an elopement to The Torridon – the gorgeous luxury hotel on the west coast. The Torridon is a venue I’ve worked at many times before and I love working there; the grounds are perfect for photographs and the library, where the wedding ceremony is usually held, has such lovely light coming in.

I’d met Kate and Ian a few months before the wedding when they were up for a short break and whilst they were both incredibly excited about their big day, they were very laid back about it all too so I knew it was going to be a chilled out day. They had decided to invite just their parents to help them celebrate and so when I arrived on the wedding day, Kate and the two mums were having hair and make up done the hotel by Anna from KGB Salon in Inverness. The boys, meanwhile, were getting ready, and drinking whisky, at The Boathouse, a ten minute walk from the hotel and where Kate and Ian were spending their wedding and honeymoon week. If you are looking for a tranquil and private place to marry and spend your first few days together you’d be hard pushed to find a better place.

Kate looked incredible in her Victoria Beckham dress – it was beautifully figure hugging and the colour was perfect. Kate said if she was going to spend on a dress, she wanted one she could wear again; a great idea I think and she totally rocked that frock!

Local registrar Gillian Morrison conducted the ceremon and afterwards there was champagne outside in the sunshine before I whisked the newlyweds off for some photographs. The light was challenging – no clouds to diffuse it – but we made some gorgeous portraits of the two of them. If you are planning an elopement to The Torridon, or anywhere in the north west Highlands, please get in touch for more information here.

The stunning flowers were created by Amanda Call Flowers in Inverness.
The bride wore a stunning Victoria Beckham dress and Jimmy Choo court shoes.

Michelle and Gerry’s wedding on board the Solas a Chuain last summer was one of the most joyous Skye elopements that I think I have photographed. They are so laid back and fun – and Gerry has a killer sense of humour – that we all just spent the day giggling. Well, apart from the obviously very serious bit where they said their vows, of course.

Michelle had contacted me a couple of months before the wedding to tell me they were eloping to Skye. We had a great Skype chat while she sat in Starbucks in London and I made do with instant from my kitchen. I knew right away that it would be a fun wedding and was looking forward to meeting her and her husband to be.

Fast forward a few weeks and it was D Day. I met the couple at Duisdale Hotel where they were staying and then we headed down to the yacht, which is skippered by Duisdale owners Anne and Ken. I was hugely excited about this because I’d been asked several times to photograph a wedding on the yacht, but I’d always been booked already, so I was champing at the bit to get on board!

Local registrar Angela Dougan did the honours after captain Ken had sailed us out to a lovely wee spot in the bay and then it was champagne time before I disembarked – via sea taxi – so the newlyweds could go off for a day sailing. Later that afternoon I caught up with them again as they arrived back at Armadale and we had another photo session nearby.

Here are some of the images we took that day. If you are planning getting married on the yacht then get in touch – I’d love to hear all about it!

As an Isle of Skye elopement photographer, I get to meet some amazing couples from across the world and one of those was Kristin and Eric from California, who were married last summer on a ledge, high above the sea, and with views of the Lealt waterfall on Skye. I met them a couple of days prior to the ceremony for a pre-wedding shoot and we had a fantastic day. I knew from spending a few hours in their company that their love for each other was immense; such a passionate couple.

For this blog post, I decided to ask Kristin and Eric a bit more about why they decided to elope to Skye, so, in Kristin’s words, here is their story.

“Eric’s maternal grandmother was born on the Isle of Skye, Mary McLeod. She passed just a few years ago and Eric was inspired to come and explore the home country as a place to propose. May of 2014 was the first trip to Skye for both of us. Eric knew that the Isle of Skye would be full of wonder and awe and that’s where he wanted to propose. I, on the other hand, thought we were just vacationing and getting to know the family history and roots. When he suggested it as a vacation spot I was thrilled at the chance to explore a place so rich with adventure and history.”

So, what about the proposal?

“There is so much to say about the proposal! I will stick to the most important parts. Eric told me we would be going on a wee walk around the Quiraing. I dressed warmly with my super stylish heeled rain boots (yes, this becomes relevant!). On the drive cross the island we made a turn and the view opened to this moving vista of the land and the ocean. I asked Eric to pull over so we could take it all in. Wow, stunning! Unlike anything I’d seen before. And yet somehow my heart knew this was an important view. (Turns out this little stop is where we chose to be married a year later!)

We get to the Quiraing and begin our walk. Eric tells me it’s rated as one of the most beautiful hikes in the world, and I believe it! We start to see avid hikers, with large backpacks full of gear, walking poles and study shoes. Looking at my wedge boots I asked him, “Do you know where we are going?” He assures me that it is not too far, and yes he does. Well, one thing to know about Eric is that he will go after what strikes his fancy. Up and up we go. Colder and colder it gets. The views sustain me, so we keep going. Finally we are at a place where the only choice is to scramble, directly up, a gravel slide. I explain to Eric the conundrum of my wedge boots, “I thought this was a walk!” He assures me we are close. I scramble up after him with my heart in my throat. It was a bit scary! He grabs my hand and pulls me up the last bit.

True to his word, we stopped at a small ledge at the top. There was no view to take in as we were directly inside a cloud. I edged closer to the cliff and dared to look down, the cloud rushing over the edge in front of me.

“It looks like we are at the end of the world” I tell Eric as I turn around. And just at that time he’s getting down on bended knee and offering me a ring.

I don’t remember exactly what he said. I do remember being entirely surprised and being afraid of falling off the cliff! I said yes! We snapped a picture. And each person we passed on the trail down was part of our celebration. I couldn’t help but actually shout it from the mountain tops, “We just got engaged! He just proposed!”

The land, so verdant and vast, seemed very important to my memory of the engagement that I knew I wanted to come back for the wedding. In order to travel so far I knew that meant we’d need to have an elopement, so that’s what we planned. Saying our vows on Skye was an integral part of our ceremony.”
How did you feel about having a tiny wedding – glad you did it?

I am so thankful that we had an intimate wedding. The whole thing felt sacred and the memories feel epic.

We originally imagined our wedding to be an elopement. As we planned out the details I knew in my heart that I wanted my mother to help me on the day of the wedding, and Eric wanted his uncle and aunt present. And I’m so glad we did that. Mom was there to help me breathe through the excited nerves while we got ready at Canowindra guest house. And Eric’s uncle was there to help him figure out how to properly put on a kilt as it was Eric’s first time wearing one!

The eve of the ceremony we decided to move our location to the other side of the island. The weather on the west side of the island had been quite blustery, while the east side of the island had sun breaks. Eric and I took a drive and found an outcropping of rock that made my pulse quicken. The view was phenomenal, ocean on one side and verdant green with a waterfall on the other side of us. We knew this was the place we wanted to make our promises.

Having a tiny wedding allowed us to make such a large change in such a small amount of time. We just needed to tell our witnesses, Sonja, our celebrant, and Lynne, our photographer. The small wedding party also allowed Eric and I to focus entirely on each other. The experience felt authentic and right.

The most important thing is that we allowed our imagination to change and grow.

What were the best bits of your trip?

“We were able to take a journey to get to Isle of Skye. We rented a car and made it an adventure to drive from Edinburgh to Skye. It can be a day trip, but we took our time. We stopped and hiked, we looked at lots of castles, stopped by small art studios and jewelry shops, and we ate at lots of really cool pubs. We took in sunsets and sunrises, wind through the trees, and the harmony of moments in time. Taking the time to slow down and laugh and talk allowed us both to unwind, rest, and be truly present before our big day.

The sle of Skye is magic. The land and seas radiate love and adventure. Go! Breathe in the air and follow your instinct to find your sacred space.”

2015. What a year it was for this Isle of Skye wedding photographer – my busiest ever! From huge gatherings of 150+ guests to elopements with just a bride and groom, I’ve met a lot of incredible couples, family members and friends this year, not only from the rest of the UK but across the globe.

Elopements have been huge for me this year; more and more couples, it seems, want to elope to Skye. I do love the intimacy of these types of ceremonies and have already got quite a lot of them lined up for 2016, as well as some very fun larger weddings too – one of which will have an Ethiopian themed wedding breakfast!

Although most of the weddings I’ve photographed this year have been held in the great outdoors, I would like to say thanks to some of the wonderful venues I’ve worked with this year including Eilean Donan Castle, Duisdale Hotel, Sligachan Hotel, Raasay House, Glenfinnan Hotel and Loch Ness Country House Hotel.

Pulling together some of my favourite images from this year was no easy task as there were so many to choose from. A massive thank you to all the couples who asked me to work with them last year – it was such a pleasure getting to know you and hearing about your lives and without you I wouldn’t have these images to show.

This year did include a few wedding firsts for me though including the first cat at a wedding, the first time a groom has taken my camera off me and dragged me on to the dance floor, the first time I’ve photographed a wedding on a yacht and the first time I’ve photographed the wedding of another professional photographer! Who knows what is in store for 2016 but thank you to those who have booked me already – I’m excited to meet you and be part of your special day.

Here we go. I hope you enjoy. Happy new year!

Shanna and Brian travelled from Seattle, USA to get married at Dunscaith Castle on the south end of the Isle of Skye. Theirs was a true elopement because not a soul knew their intentions before they flew across the Atlantic ocean to Scotland. As far as their family and friends were concerned it was just another vacation.

They arrived on Skye at their accommodation a couple of days before the wedding and we met for coffee with Sonja, my wonderful friend, who would be conducting the ceremony. Whilst they tucked into breakfast (Brian went for the full Scottish including haggis and black pudding) we discussed plans for the wedding the next day. I explained that weather wise, who knows what will happen, you just have to hope for the best and go with it, but as it turned out, we ended up with blue skies with just a little cloud, which made for some very dramatic shots.

When I met Shanna and Brian on the morning of the wedding (at their fabby little apartment Shiloh) Shanna was just putting together her bouquet and a buttonhole from a selection of wild flowers they had collected that morning while out on a walk. I was so impressed how quickly and beautifully she put together the flowers – a very talented and creative young woman!

While Shanna was busy doing with the flowers and getting herself ready, Brian was finishing off his vows and a short while later we were setting off to meet with Sonja, and the two witnesses she had arranged, at the ceremony spot.

The ceremony itself was incredibly emotional. I always feel it is such a privilege to be part of such an intimate moment between a couple and listening to the vows they made each other was just wonderful. After the vows, the rings and the kiss, they danced to their favourite couple of tunes and then signed the documents that made it all legal and then we spent a few hours driving around, chatting and photographing, before they went off to a lovely local restaurant for their wedding meal.

Here are a few photographs from Shanna and Brian’s amazing elopement on the Isle of Skye.

A Fairy Glen Elopement

One of my most favourite weddings ever was a Fairy Glen elopement last year but this time it was not just the bride and groom who were in attendance but also their two gorgeous children, who played very special parts in the ceremony.

Manon and Patrick travelled from Luxembourg in their fabulous orange campervan with son Ben and daughter Lara, to their holiday house at Lyndale in the north of Skye. They had arranged to have their wedding at the Fairy Glen because they fell in love with it’s mystical appearance.

I arrived at their accommodation to meet them and was so impressed with the effort they had gone to in preparing for the ceremony. Lots of beautiful details, from the quaich in which they would drink their first drink together, to the ribbon used in the handfasting with special charms to represent various important parts of their life, to the blessing book and even a sword which was made especially for them by Skye swordmaker Rob Miller.

When we arrived at the Fairy Glen we met up with Skye celebrant Sonja Eckl-Reil, who I work with a lot, and who creates the most wonderful ceremonies for her couples. Ben played a tune on his guitar as part of the ceremony and Lara also looked after the rings. It was a real family affair!

After the ceremony Sonja kept the children entertained in the van while I nipped off with mum and dad for a few photographs. Here are some of my favourites. PS Beautiful flowers by Donald at Loch Duich Plants.

If you are planning to elope to Skye, or planning a wedding anywhere in the Highlands and Islands, then get in touch because I’d love to hear about it!
